Brian Putt Trophy - Sunday 15th January
The attrition rate was brutal as 6 anglers drew a blank in attrocious conditions that started with thunder, hail, gale force winds and then continued with 2 hours of torrential rasin, but ironically ended with the canal like a millpond as everone was packing up! Needless to say most of the fish were banked in the last two hours by those anglers still standing after a 3 hour battering.
To try and improve everyones lot the pegs were squised up so the Lower Basin was actually pegs 7 to 18, the remainder in the narrows, which more closly resembled the North Atlantic (perhaps comfy pegs over equity might have been a better choice at the draw with hindsight, I fancied that peg under the fir tree!).
Fresh back from skiing in the Alps the previous day, Mat Sampson bagged a number of decent skimmers on the tip to net just shy of 10lbs to win the contest from roughly the middle of the basin. London Tony Hillas had a late run of skimmers but fell 6ozs short (and like a lot of anglers losing a sizeable skimmer at the net due to the wind), finishing second. Just 4ozs behind were Dave Allen and Mark Grattoin who banked 9lb 2ozs of skimmers each for a share of 3rd. There were section wins for Simon Allen (basin) and Ryan Willshire (narrows).
