The eagerly awaited opening pairs match saw a reversal of recent years form with the Pond out fishing the Lake with a number of good catches of tench, crucians, roach and rudd. This was the first match where the new 5lb blanket weight applied, so weights as published only include carp at 5lbs+ as 5lbs in weight.
It was the Bude Bay Pirates superstar Adrian ‘Sailor’ Hill who tamed a couple of lumps from the Lake, one topping the scales at over 11lbs (only counting 5lbs under the new rule), to win that section. Partner Mark ‘Welsh Wizard’ Gratton with a near 10lb bag of silvers (more truthfully ‘browns’) from the ‘wall peg’ in the Pond ensured they began the campaign in winning style.
Substituting for Simon Allen, Len Hancock bagged over 11lbs of ‘browns’ to win the Pond section for Me and My Boy, but a couple of lost carp by Dave Allen on the Lake cost them the victory and they had to settle for 2nd.
The Brendon All Stars completed the podium with midfield finishes for Matt Sampson (Lake -7lbs 15ozs) and London Tone (aka Elvis) (Pond 6lb 10ozs).
A big thanks to everyone who formed the working party on Thursday eve, and whilst there was still plenty of weed to contend with, I don’t think anyone has missed the tree. I am sure that ‘up there’ Mickey Richards would have been smiling when that one came down!
