Winter League, 7, Sunday 25th February:
After carp anglers had been fishing on peg 20 all day Saturday, Matt Sampson went after a lump early doors and banked a 13lb winner with only 20 minutes of the contest gone! Everyone else was left scratching with a complete shut out in the Second Basin for the first (and hopefully only) time this season.
For the second match running Trevor Vernalls again found the roach in the icy conditions and netted close on 2lbs using the long pole. Paul Braund was on the Au Du Lion size 24 hooks and the 2 mill punch to bag 27 red fins for 13ozs (mainly small fish as they say!).
Down on pegs 14 and 15 Simon Hockaday and Kevin Hill went 'fish for fish', each catching 5 silvers apiece for 8ozs and a share of the Lower Basin section. Perhaps the biggest winner on the day was Tony Hillas who now moves five points clear at the top of the Winter League after he snuck the last big points awarded on the day with 1oz.
The only excitement in the Second Basin came from peg 25 where Len missed four chances to clean up with the section win. On the day, the freezing conditions and easterly wind saw the much feared mass blank.
