Winter League Round 6, Sunday 10th January:
A bonus fish between the hail and thunderstorms was the requirement for the day and Sunday's contest ended with a tale of a carp, two slabs and a mixed bag. Peter Slade and Len Hancock both had gilt edged chances to win but saw defeat snatched from the jaws of victory as they lost good sized carp at the Bird Hide section.
With Nathan Underwood bagging a 7lb 15oz carp from the Lower Basin early doors he need not have worried about only adding a further 2ozs as 8lbs was easily enough to win on the day. He had the added bonus of £100 prize money for winning off the silver peg. Nathan must have been worried when Adrian 'Sailor' Hill netted a fine 5lb+ humpback slab but without the 'bits' to go with it he could only amass a total of 6lbs and settle for the runner-up spot. Dave Allen did not find the bonus fish but did land a string of half decent roach, skimmers and eels to bring nearly 5lbs of bits to the net for third place. Mike Bowden also found a slab from the Second Basin and with a bumper turnout of 23 anglers his 3lbs+ net was enough for the fourth and final placing.
There were section wins for Peter Slade (Bird Hide), Dick Turner (Second Basin) and Simon Allen (Lower Basin). The Lower Basin had fished well on the Friday and was hotly tipped as the place to be, but on the day Simon won the section with 11ozs (lucky for Si Kier Durrant is a junior as he banked 1lb from peg 20) and three other anglers blanked!
No one said winter fishing was easy.
